As you know, the Tiny House trend started with the pandemic in our country and has just become popular, but it has not yet been able to progress in the direction required by the trend. In this article, we will make an assessment not according to the current state of the Tiny House trend in Turkey, but according to what it should be and what we, as Haos Design, have been predicting for years.
1. What can we predict about the future popularity and evolution of tiny houses?
Currently, tiny houses are mostly used for tourism or as weekend homes for individuals who want to get away from the city. In Turkey, tiny houses have not yet become a popular alternative to permanent living. Of course, it does not necessarily have to be one or the other. For those who have to live and work in the metropolis or city centers, the tiny house will remain an option to breathe and escape to nature during the holidays, but the transition to permanent living in tiny houses has begun, albeit unpopular, and it is possible to predict that this trend will continue to increase rapidly. There are three main reasons for this, the first is the awareness of natural life that many of us gained with the pandemic, the second is the fear after the great earthquake disaster we experienced, and the third is the housing and real estate crisis. In fact, the start of the tiny house trend was due to the real estate crisis related to the economy.
One of the things that many of us questioned and realized the most after the great Kahramanmaras earthquake that caused so many casualties was the concept of luxury. Was it luxury to have houses with large square meters, to have too many belongings, to live in the most expensive location? This natural disaster painfully taught us that none of these things exist. You can have all the luxuries in small square meters, in properly solved spaces, in your Tiny Houses made of healthy and sustainable materials, benefiting from the beauty and healing power of nature. It is possible, we know it, we watch it, we hear it. The number of people taking action to join this trend and live better is increasing every day. One of the most basic human needs is safe shelter; the fear of disasters has mobilized this search for safe spaces and survival instinct in many of us. That is exactly why the number of people curiously looking for tiny house companies has increased a lot. It will probably continue to increase. Awareness of natural and ecological living for the three main reasons we have just mentioned brings us to our second topic.
2. How can sustainability trends influence the Tiny House movement?
After we were all locked in our homes during the pandemic, we realized the value of something very important that we had perhaps never realized we were missing until then: being in nature and breathing. Those who had large balconies in their homes were perhaps a little luckier, but the luckiest of us were those who had detached houses with gardens. However, not all of us can afford such houses, and here again tiny houses come to our rescue. This is when people in Turkey started to recognize the tiny house trend, to need it more than ever, to wish that they could have a house with a garden, even if it is tiny... Again, this is when we realized the importance of the food we know to be healthy that we grow in our gardens, saving money and protecting nature. Sustainable living has become a necessity rather than an alternative. The consumption frenzy that triggered global warming has turned into a climate crisis as we continue to damage nature, the frequency of disasters has increased, and the living conditions that we think have become easier with technology have actually become extremely difficult. "Living" has become harder... This is why our awareness of the importance of sustainability and ecological solutions has increased. However, the Tiny House trend offers an attractive alternative for individuals seeking an escape from this urban chaos.
A smaller and simpler lifestyle can reduce the stress of city life. It can also be an economical solution for those who want to cope with the cost of living in the city. With the increasing number of people taking action for a better life and getting involved in the tiny house trend, it seems inevitable that these tiny houses will gain more popularity in Turkey in the future.
